This week, I spent some times for the traffic sign extraction from the natural scene capture. This is to classify the foreground and background area of a given traffic sign image. Then we can apply the line receptors only to the foreground areas of the traffic sign for the recognition and before that, training.

Based on Dr. Wang's traffic sign detection demonstration that he showed us last week, I think the the sign detection result I will get will be in the rectangle 2-D image format. But the actual traffic sign are in various shapes including triangle, rectangle, pentagon and octagon and I expect the result that I will get will include the area that is not of a traffic sign. So I implemented the closed convex polygon detection algorithms to extract the correct boundary of the traffic sign if it exists in. Intermediate experiment results that are applied to natural scene captures available at Develop traffic sign recognition modules. It comes with brief explanations and source codes.
