Precise roll gap setup technology for edger roll in roughing mill (PRGS) is developed to measure the diameter of the edger roll in roughing mill to set up the slab width with very high accuracy. It is installed directly under the rough mill and regularly measures the edger gap width. The roll gap is measured using the robotic arm equipped with LVDT (Linear Vertical Displacement Transducer) and built on top of the hydro-powered telescopic cylinder for up and down operation.

Automatic edger roll gap measuring system for the hot strip roughing mill is developed to improve the strip width accuracy. Although the edger roll gap can be measured directly by operator, the measuring accuracy is not so good and the operating condition is very dangerous to operator. Therefore in this study, automatic measuring system which can be kept safely in the hard environment of roughing mill and provide precise roll gap value during measurement is developed.

The roll gap measuring device uses contact-type air-driven LVDT sensor and the movement of measuring device is performed by telescopic type moving device. As the measured signal is designed to be displayed instantaneously in the local and pulpit panel, optimum roll gap set-up can be done very quickly. After adopting this system to operating line, the edger roll gap can be measured within 1 min and the measuring error lies within +/- 1mm for the 1000 mm reference roll gap.
